Ravine

Impressions Series

Ravine belongs to a later stage of the Impressions series, in which the landscape gradually acquires a more abstracted and symbolic painterly language. Surface texture, the character and direction of brushstrokes become as important as the natural subject itself.

The mass of the ravine is immersed in deep brown, ochre, and red tones of fallen leaves. Slender tree trunks rise from this dense, dark foundation. Their crowns, illuminated by warm autumn light, resemble delicate branches of dried flowers — almost weightless against the heaviness of the earth.

It is precisely the contrast between the massiveness of the ravine and the fragility of the trees that creates the work's inner tension. Below, autumn has already become matter — leaves, earth, shadow, and dense texture. Above, it still remains light and colour, lingering within the treetops.

The vertical rhythm of the trunks, the fragmented brushwork, and the rich orange and red accents gradually distance the image from a direct representation of the landscape. The natural subject transforms into a painterly structure in which nature is perceived through rhythm, texture, and colour.

Ravine conveys autumn as a state of fragile equilibrium between preservation and disappearance. The trees still hold the last warmth of the season within their crowns, while below, its traces have already become part of the earth.
