Autumn in Transcarpathia is a dramatic landscape shaped by the tension between the fading of autumn and the last strength of sunlight. The intense rays of the low sun draw the hilltop out of shadow, briefly restoring warmth and colour to the earth.
The sun-scorched autumn grass seems to have already resigned itself to the approaching cold season, while a solitary tree at the top of the hill continues to reach towards the last rays of the sun. Its illuminated crown becomes the focal point of the composition's inner tension — an image of resistance to inevitable change.
Above the earth, another landscape unfolds. Massive clouds echo the dramatic rhythm of the hills, forming their own shifting contours. Earth and sky seem to mirror one another: dark masses give way to flashes of light, stillness to movement, and fading to a brief return of warmth.
